The Saaroa or Hla’alua people are an indigenous people of central southern Taiwan. They live in two villages, Taoyuan and Kaochung, in Kaohsiung.

The group attained official recognition from the Taiwanese government in 2014 under the name Hla’alua.

With fewer than 10 native speakers and an ethnic population of 400 people, the Saaroa Language is considered critically endangered. Even among native speakers of the language, Mandarin or Bunun is the primary language spoken in daily life (wikipedia.org).

When grouped according to grammar, the Saaroa Language is most closely related to the other Formosan language: Tsou. Historically, the Tsou people group used to occupy a fairly large area in the southwestern part of central Taiwan. Due to the invasion of other communities and contagious diseases, the Tsou community shrank to the relatively small areas as today. The oral tradition says that the Tsou group originated in Yushan, central Taiwan. About 2,000 years ago, the group split into two, the Northern Tsou and Southern Tsou. Northern Tsou moved to the west, while the Southern Tsou moved south along Laonung River. The Southern Tsou later split into two groups, Kanakanabu and Saaroa, about 800 years ago. In 1990, the Saaroa Language was nearly extinct. Few children speak the language. The Bunun language is becoming the main language of the Saaroa people, and many of the elders in the community speak Taiwanese Hokkien. The shift to the Bunun language occurred when the Bunun migrated into the area inhabited by the Saaroa people.
