TAIWAN – 台灣

The Island of Taiwan is home to several varieties of languages under families of: (1) Austronesian languages, and (2) Sino-Tibetan languages (wikipedia.org).

The Formosan languages, a branch of Austronesian languages, have been spoken by the Taiwanese aborigines in Taiwan for thousands of years. Research on historical linguistics recognize Taiwan as the “Urheimat” (in linguistic terms: “place of origin”) of the whole Austronesian Language Family, since linguistic studies show the highest internal variety of the Formosan languages is found on Taiwan, including nine of the ten primary branches of the entire Austronesian Language Family. The most complex form of the proto-Austronesian language is found on Orchid Island (Lanyu) off the southeast coast of Taiwan. There are efforts to preserve the language spoken among the few remaining islanders on Lanyu (wikipedia.org).

MAP OF THE SPREAD OF AUSTRONESIAN PEOPLES. Research into the historic linguistics of Austronesian languages suggest Taiwan is the place of origin (in linguistic terminology, “Urheimat”) of the languages spoken by Austronesian peoples. Nine of the ten primary branches of the Austronesian language family are found on Taiwan (wikipedia.org).

Over the last 400 years, multiple waves of emigration onto the Island of Taiwan from the adjacent Chinese mainland brought several Sino-Tibetan languages into Taiwan. These languages include Taiwanese Hokkien, Hakka, and Mandarin. These are the major languages in the culture of present-day Taiwan (wikipedia.org).

Mandarin is officially the national language (國語; Guóyǔ) in Taiwan. In 1945, following the end of World War II, Mandarin was introduced as the official language and made compulsory in schools. Before 1945, Japanese was the official language and was taught in the schools. Since then, Mandarin has been established as a “lingua franca” among the various groups in Taiwan: (1) the majority Taiwanese-speaking Hoklo (Hokkien); (2) the Hakka who have their own spoken language; (3) the aboriginals who speak aboriginal languages; and (4) groups of Chinese who immigrated to the island from the mainland in 1949. The native tongue of the people groups who immigrated in 1949 may be any Chinese variant (wikipedia.org).
