During the Song (C.E. 420-479) and Yuan (1271-1368) Dynasties, Jianshui was the center of pottery-making in Yunnan. Nixi Black Pottery, from the Diqing Tibetan autonomous prefecture, Yunnan province. Caravans on the ancient Tea Horse Road would pick up the black pottery from the village while ferrying brick loads of tea to and from Tibet for trade.
